Haitian President, Jovenel Moïse was killed in his own residence at Port-au-Prince. The conspicuous incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday, 7th July. Even though the exact number of assassins is still anonymous. However, the authority claims there to be 26 gunmen. The mystery behind the assassination still remains unknown. Bocchi Edmond, the Haitian ambassador to the U.S., said the attack on the 53-year-old Moïse was carried out by “well-trained professional commandos” and “foreign mercenaries” who were masquerading as agents of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The attackers disguised to appear as the soldiers of DEA. Likewise, the authorities even believe that that half of the attackers were Colombian. Recently, Haitian police have killed at least three suspects and arrested at least 17 others. The arrested include two U.S. citizens from Florida, James Solages, and Joseph Vincent. Despite the fact, the attackers are under arrest, the real motive behind the assassination still remains a mystery.

In the midst of the dangerous incident, Mr. Jovenel Moïse’s wife, Martine, was shot too. Even though she survived the attack, her condition still seems critical. She is currently at the hospital in Florida. Likewise, the couple’s three children, Jomarlie, Jovenel Jr, and Joverlein, are reportedly in a safe location.

Police arrest the key suspect

Police believe that Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a 63-year-old Haitian doctor is one of the key suspects of the assassination. Mr. Sanon flew into the country in late June with a political motive. Police announced Mr. Sanon’s arrest during a police briefing on late Sunday. Mr. Charles said, “When we, the police, blocked the progress of these bandits after they committed their crime, the first person that one of the assailants called was Christian Emmanuel Sanon,”. Likewise, this is what made Haitian Police assured of Mr. Sanon being the key suspect. In addition to that, they have found two more suspects whom they don’t want to reveal right now.

What next for Haiti?

Jovenel Moïse had become increasingly disliked for hanging on to the power after his term expired in February. Protesters had been demanding his resignation for months. Because he wasn’t even able to give basic citizens’ needs. In recent months, protesters had taken to the streets to demand Mr. Moïse’s removal. He had clung to power, ruling by decree for more than a year. The country already was facing political instability, post effects due to earthquake, cholera epidemic, foreign political meddling, and gang violence. In addition to that, the assassination has invited many more difficulties as two prime ministers stood up for the president’s power, Henry and Joseph.

However, Joseph remains the top official in charge. And urges everyone to stay calm. Moïse had scheduled the new election in September. Joseph assures everyone that the election will definitely take place in September. In addition to that, Joseph told the AP that he supports an international investigation into Moïse’s killing.
