Her parents; Sarah Lacher (mother) and Charles Scher (father) were Jewish immigrants from Poland. Her dad used to install glass windows into automobiles and trucks. Whereas, her mom was a homemaker.
Moreover, Estelle grew up with the nickname “Etty” which was easy for her sister, Rosilyn “Roz” Scher Howard to pronounce. She used to go to the Academy of Music in order to watch a live vaudeville performance with her family very often. For her education, Estelle joined Seward Park High School. Estelle always wanted to make her career in acting, however, her family had a doubt on her dream. Finally, her father allowed her to attend auditions when she stood as an independent.
At the beginning phase of her career, Estelle Getty played several roles in the New York theater. Until that time, she was already taking care of her two sons, however, running in the film industry with her talent. After struggling for long years, she finally went to encounter with her breakthrough role as Mrs. Beckoff in a collection of three plays by Hervey Fierstein, Torch Song Trilogy. Her husband, Arthur Gettleman used to work in his father-in-law glass installation business. Estelle lived together with her husband in the Bronx for a time and after the birth of their children, they shifted to Queens. Till the last breathe of her spouse, Etty took care of him. At last, Arthur died at the age of 85 on 24th September 2004.
After the death of her spouse, Estelle got involved in HIV/AIDS activism and helped her co-star and nephew to fight with the disease. She was not only focused on HIV/AIDS activism but was also a socialist and did many things for the society.
