Bella Poarch: From TikTok to Mainstream

TikTok is one such platform that allows people’s creativity to shine. From dancing, singing, and acting to art, skits, or merely some comedic video, TikTok has it all. So many people have become famous through this app and gone to do improved things. One such person is Bella Poarch.

Bella Poarch: Claim To Fame

Poarch went viral after posting a face-zoom video of her lip-syncing to ‘M to the B.’ Her barely-there makeup, adorable expression, and methodically nodding her head to the beats — it captivated many people. That video is the most liked TikTok video of all time, with over 50 million likes to date.

Poarch started gaining fame, and now, she has over 73.5 million followers on TikTok. However, with more fans, more criticisms started coming in. Fans began accusing her of having no talent, romanticizing childish looks and behaviors, and did not like the fact that “she got famous by nodding head.” Poarch proved everyone wrong when she released her debut single ‘, Build a B-tch.’

‘Build a B-tch,’ released on May 14, 2021, broke many records. She reached up to position 56 on US Billboard Hot 100 and 32 on US Mainstream Top 40. Her song is also the most viewed debut song on YouTube, garnering over 10 million views on the day of release.

Bella Poarch’s Traumatizing Past

While Poarch is a successful star now, this was not always the case. Poarch gave her first interview on June 17, 2021, on the H3 Podcast. Hosted by Ethan and Hila Klein, H3 Podcast is one of the most famous podcasts on YouTube.

Poarch went into detail explaining her childhood and the abuse she faced at the hands of her adopted parents, leaving the Kleins and the audience shocked.

Poarch was born on February 8, 1997, in the Philippines. She does not know who her birth parents were, but she lived with her grandmother until 3. A family of an American father and a Filipino mother then adopted her. She lived with three other siblings — two older sisters and one older brother. Until 7, Poarch was living happily with her adopted family. After that, the abuse started.

Their father heavily abused her and her brother. Poarch recalled how she had to wake up at 3 AM to clean the farm animals and the farm. If she made a slight mistake, she would get slapped by her father and not have breakfast. Her adopted parents used to call her ‘ stupid b***h’ and did not allow her to even sit on the couch.

Poarch used to get bullied in school as well. This is because she had curly hair while growing up, which was against the beauty standards in the Philippines. However, Poarch loved school and confessed that she would rather be bullied in school than abused at home. Poarch tried to get help from her neighbors and teachers; however, nobody would help her.

Bella And Her Navy Story

In an emotional statement, she claimed how she had no childhood. She used to see her schoolmates with their parents and used to get jealous. She came to the USA with her brother and adoptive parents when she was a teenager. In 2015, at  17, she joined the U.S. Navy. When she left for the Navy, her father reminded her never to return since it was not Poarch’s house.

Poarch felt the most freedom at U.S. Navy. She was out of the abusive household, but it had already taken a toll on her mental health. They diagnosed her with PTSD and depression. She was also declared suicidal since she tried to end her life twice.

Poarch served the U.S. Navy for four years. After that, they suggested her not to continue by her doctors since everything was piling up on her. So she lived with her friends in Hawaii after the Navy. It was there she came across TikTok was and started making videos. And the rest is history.
