A person can never be happy and satisfied all the time. There comes a time when nothing seems to work out in the way you want. This is when people feel frustrated and try giving up on themselves. You might have heard or felt frustration at least at one point in life, but what actually is frustration?

Frustration is the feeling of being upset or annoyed as a result of being unable to change or achieve something. Frustration occurs when an individual continues action in the expectation of the gratification or desired goal but does not actually attain it (Dollard et al., 1939; Berkowitz, 1989; Anderson and Bushman, 2002). It is an emotional response to stress which originates from feelings of uncertainty and insecurity. Some of the responses to frustration include loss of confidence and self-esteem, anger, quitting, depression.

Ways to overcome it

Recognize the cause of frustration

Examining the situation to determine the cause of frustration can be a useful first step in overcoming it. It is necessary to recognize if your frustration is internal i.e. you are unhappy with yourself or the way you reacted in a situation or external i.e. the thing that’s causing your frustration is outside of you.

Talk to someone you trust

Talk to someone you trust about your feelings. Keeping your feelings inside won’t do any good but may worsen the situation so talking loud can help you sort through what you are feeling.

Start Journaling


You may not be comfortable talking about everything even when you are close to them. At that time, writing your feelings and experiences down is always a better option. It may be helpful to make a list of everything that is bothering you. You can then decide what needs to be done to the things that you can change.

Clear your mind

You can read books, watch videos, pet an animal, step outside for a moment or do yoga and exercises to clear your mind. There are many more examples you can try. Do the one or two that work best for you. It helps to take a quick mental break.

You need to recognize things that you cannot change. Stressing over things which cannot be changed is no good. So you need to accept the fact that not everything can be done as per your need or will. Letting go of things which you cannot control will be best for you.

Do the activities that make you happy

Doing what makes you happy is the best way to overcome frustration. Doing something that you don’t want or don’t seem to work out will only lead to stress. Engage in those activities that make your soul happy and: eating your favorite food or going on a vacation.

In the race of achieving something in life , you often forget to appreciate the little things. Little things in life makes a big difference . So appreciate the little things that you do have and what you have achieved instead of stressing over the things you cannot achieve.

You need to solve your fears whether it may be fear of failing or being laughed at. You need to come out of your comfort zone and face your fears and worries.
