Childhood of Masai Ujiri – Parents

Masai Ujiri was born on 7th July 1970 in Bournemouth, England when his parents were still in their study phase. When Masai reached the age of two, his family moved to Nigeria. His father used to be a hospital administrator and nursing educator. Meanwhile, his mother was a doctor from Machakos Country.

When Masai was in his childhood, he had a great interest in football and also played in international soccer as a youth. At the age of 13, Masai’s interest in basketball increased as he used to play outdoor basketball in northern Nigeria with his friends. At the initial phase, he was inspired by the Nigerian-American former basketball player, Hakeem Olajuwon.

Educational Background

Masai Ujiri’s parents were so much educated supported Masai a lot to pursue his career in his interested field. Masai joined his high school in his hometown and then started playing from his school’s team.

In order to play for Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, he left Nigeria. He then spent two years playing basketball at Bismarck State College. Following, he joined Montana State University Billings.

Professional Life – NBA Career

At the beginning phase of his career, Masai Ujiri spent six years playing professionally in Europe. He then played one year in England and also was in the second-division team in Belgium and Germany. He ended playing basketball after his game in Denmark. In the year 2002, he started working as a youth coach in Nigeria.

His coaching skills later impressed David Thorpe who introduced Masai to college coaches. Later, he met Gary Brokaw who introduced him with Doc Rivers and GM John Gabriel. Following, the Nuggets general manager, Kiki Vandeweghe who offered him a salary as an international scout.

Masai Ujiri served as an international scout for four years and then Bryan Colangelo of the Toronto Raptors offered him the post of their Director of Global Scouting. He then promoted as the Raptors’ assistant general manager in 2008. In 2013, he signed $15 Million, a 5 year deal with Toronto Raptors as an executive vice president and general manager. The Raptors won the 2019 NBA championship.

Controversy: Allegations & Charges

During the 2019 NBA Finals, Masai Ujiri got caught into a controversy after one of the Alameda County Sheriff’s deputy, Alan Strickland and his wife, Kelly Strickland sued a case against him. The lawsuit was made against Masai with the accusations of assault, battery, intentional infliction, and emotional expenses.

After Toronto Raptors made the history in 2019 NBA Finals winning against Golden State Warriors, Masai tried to get to the floor or basketball court. As per the deputy officer, he asked Masai for proper credentials which he couldn’t provide. However, the charges of Masai were canceled due to the lack of evidence.
