Migraine is still a disease that doesn’t yet have a cure.

However, more than 38 million people are affected by migraine in the USA alone.

Although, there is no permanent damage caused by the disease, it can be quite frustrating for the patient.

So, if you’ve stumbled upon this article, you probably have it as well.

There are certain treatments for migraine headache that you can do at home.

I have been getting migraine headaches for almost 12 years now and i’m just 21.

My migraine started when I was very small. I didn’t even understand what was happening to me at the times I got it.

For my parents it wasn’t something new because even my mother has it.

Yes, there are chances that your migraine is hereditary.

Almost 90% of the people with migraine have reported that some other family members have it too.

So, I am listing down the ways in which you can minimize the attacks and also ways to reduce the pain when you are having one.

Tips to reduce the pain while having a migraine attack:

1. Darken your room and make it quiet:

Most of the times, migraine attacks are caused due to the irritation towards sound or light.

When you feel that you are going to have a headaches or already have one, shift towards a quieter place.

I have also found that darkening your room at your home can also help in the treatment of migraine headaches.

You should make sure that you rest in a calm and quiet room where nothing disturbs your sleep.

2. Essential oils for migraine headaches:

Many people have reported that using lavender oil helps reduce their pain.

Patients can use essential oils to minimize the the symptoms.

This is one of the treatments you can use to relieve the pain caused by migraine.

3. Over the counter drugs for headaches:

If you get a migraine attack, you can always opt for over the counter medicines and pain killers.

However, doctors suggest to use drugs only after getting it checkup. It is always better to get recommendations for the drugs.

You can use the drugs like Rizatripatan, almotripatan and ibuprofen to reduce the pain.

I would suggest that you take enough rest after taking the medicine.

In order for the medicine to properly work, I normally eat something , take a pill and then nap.

This increases the chance of waking up with the headache completely gone.

4. Ginger for the nausea:

Most of the migraine headaches result in throbbing pain, nausea and vomiting.

Substituting pain killers with ginger or just take ginger in any form or kind can help you relieve the pain.

Ginger is has the antibacterial properties that can help dealing with inflammation.

In the case of migraine headaches, taking ginger can cool down your body if you vomit.

Drinking ginger tea can help you soothe your pain. It is one of the best treatments of migraine headaches at home proven by research.

5.Ice Packs:

Using ice packs or just frozen peas for 15 mins can significantly reduce your pain.

The cold packs can reduce the inflammation caused during the headaches and make the tension go away as well.

You can also take a cold shower for 15 minutes.

I would recommend doing it only if you are not prone to sinus headaches because the cold might instead trigger one.

Doing this can be one of the treatment to migraine headaches at home without having to visit the doctor.

6. Massage for the pain:

One of the best ways you can reduce your pain is to get a massage.

You don’t need anyone professional to do it. Most of the times, I even do it to myself.

Just focus on the point where you feel the most pain and try to massage those parts directly.

If you can get someone else to do it for you that is even better.

You can just fall asleep to someone massaging your head.

But if you are in too much pain, I would suggest you to take some painkillers as well.

Massaging alone might not help to stop the pain completely.

Tips to prevent the migraine attacks:

I have learnt from my experience that maintaining a regular exercise schedule can definitely reduce your chances of getting a migraine headache.

It is important that your body functions good in order to reduce the chances of triggering your headaches.

So, working out your body can help ease your nerves. You don’t have to go to the gym to exercise.

You can always work out at your convenience at home. Stretching also helps relieves the stress in your muscles and nerves.

2. Staying away from caffeinated drinks

Some people suggest caffeine for pain reduction. However, I am against the idea of high consuming high amount of caffeine.

Mostly because, drinking too much caffeinated drinks can instead trigger your migraine rather than reduce it.

Research has shown that people had regularly drank more than 3 cups of coffee were more prone to migraine attacks, than those who didn’t.

3. Vitamin B12:

Vitamin B12 keeps the nervous system strong and makes red blood cells for the body. It has been researched that a lower amount of Vitamin B12 can increase your chances of migraine headaches. You can maintain your hormonal level in check.

4. Hydration:

In order to rule away the chances of getting migraine attacks, you need to stay hydrated.

It is not that difficult to do as well. When you are dehydrated your are more likely to get irritated faster.

5. Stress Management:

High level of stress can trigger migraine headaches faster.

So, try to manage your time properly if you are prone to get migraine attacks.

If you have more chances of suffering from migraine, make sure that you keep a to do list and work accordingly.

It is also important that you maintain a proper sleep time table.

As irritation cause by lack of sleep can also trigger migraine in some people.

Make sure that you get the sleep that you require.

6. Magnesium for Migraine:

Magnesium helps in keeping your blood pressure level stable, regulates your muscle and bones functions.

Research has proven that a lack of magnesium can be tied to migraine headaches.

Magnesium also helps to reduce the chances of getting auras which is generally caused due to irritability in light and sound.

So, eat green leafy vegetables and anything else that can provide you with magnesium.

You can do these along with the above tips:

  • Don’t wear tight jewellery or anything that can build pressure around your head to reduce tension it might cause.
  • Avoid eat foods that irritate you, this can make you congested and irritate you.
  • Don’t starve yourself because, it can also cause migraine headaches.
  • Lastly, but very importantly, make a note of the dates that you get migraine headaches. Most of the times, the pain is routine and you can almost predict it. This can also help in avoiding it completely through necessary measures.
