Lost Civilizations of the World

lost civilization of the world

This world is so much more than what meets the eye. While we feel like humans have seen and experienced everything the world has to offer, there are still so many unexplored things lying in plain sight.

How did life begin might not be a mystery anymore. But why did it begin and is it just Earth that carries life is still unknown.

Come to think of it, even the histories of so many civilizations are still unknown.

Life of human beings on earth began thousands of years ago. And over the centuries it has evolved so much.

Human beings have come a long way from the hunting-gathering era to the technological era. And along the way, we have evolved to become one of the most intelligent beings.

From inventing things like electricity, a cure to multiple diseases to exploring the space, we have and are still doing it all. And yet, we are so unsuccessful to know and to figure out how some of the most powerful civilizations perished.

While the Maya, the Easter Island, and the Indus Valley civilizations are some of the well-known civilizations that disappeared with very few traces of their existences. There are some other civilizations people don’t have much knowledge of.

Here are 5 lost civilizations of the world that no one really knows about.

Thonis Civilization.

The city of Thonis, also known as Heracleion was an ancient Egyptian city. It was located near the Canopic Mouth of the Nile.

The city of Thonis or Heracleion, as the Greek referred to it, was Egypt’s primary trading port in 2nd Century BC. Most of Egypt’s international trades happened in this city.

Thonis was filled with large temples of different Egyptian gods all over the city. The city heavily developed and flourished between the 6th and 4th centuries BC.

But the city met its downfall at the end of 2nd century BC. The city of Thonis sunk beneath the sea due to a number of earthquakes, tsunamis, and rising sea-levels.

The Sanxingdui.

Sanxingdui is an archaeological site in modern Guanghan, Sichuan, China. It is also an important Bronze Age culture.

In 1929 the evidence of ancient culture was first found in this region. But it was in 1986 a major excavation was held. And during that time archaeologists found some remarkable artifacts that dated back to 12th-11th centuries.

The most remarkable being the Sanxingdui bronze head statues and sacrificial pits with thousands of bronze, gold, jade, and pottery artifacts.

Even though archaeologists have found so many pieces of evidence about the Sanxingdui culture, they haven’t yet figured out what wiped this fairly unknown tribe away.

Studies suggest that a vicious earthquake struck the region before the tribe vanished.

Foothills Mountain Complex.

The Anasazi was local Paleo-Indian tribes that lived in Mesa Verde which today is an American National Park.

They were famous for erecting Cliff Palaces around the areas of Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado.

The Ancestral Pueblo constructed these cliff dwellings due to the increasing competition in the middle of changing climatic conditions.

In around the 1300s, the Ancestral Pueblo abandoned the cliff dwellings. While the real reason is still unknown, people believe it was a series of megadroughts. This interrupted the food productions forcing the tribe to leave.

The Sea Peoples.

While there isn’t much evidence of the existence of the Sea Peoples, they are believed to be a group of naval raiders sailing around the Mediterranean.

Theories suggest that the Sea Peoples consisted of several Aegean tribes, scattered soldiers who were either pirates or refugees and raiders from Central Europe.

They basically raided and terrorized ancient Egypt and other regions of the East Mediterranean.

Their existence is merely theories based on different books and texts written during the time. They appeared from nowhere, attacked the ships and raided all the places and disappear. All that, without leaving any traces behind.

The Land of Punt.

The land of Punt is an ancient mythical kingdom. Historians suggest that Punt was a wealthy kingdom filled with tremendous treasures and resources.

The people of Punt were traders. Records suggest that Egyptian along with different African nations did multiple trades with Punt.

The exact location of the Land of Punt is still debatable and unknown. Most scholars believe Punt was located to the southeast of Egypt.

Punt is also referred to as Ta netjer which means the “Land of the God.”

What is strange is that a city so prosperous vanished without leaving behind any traces of existence.
